Drawing Fundamentals

Drawing Fundamentals with Artist Hector Acuna

This workshop will be centered on drawing with a focus on composing dynamic designs for landscape, figurative, and imaginative paintings. However, I believe the topics covered would apply to other fields of two dimensional art as well including graphic novels, illustration, printmaking, and digital art. We will discuss the variety of mark making applications which inform our own drawing styles and visual language. The design principles will be used to structure our goals for successful compositions that break away from centering focal points. The elements of art will be used to structure the tools and strategies available to us to make compelling images, in particular the elements of line, shape, and value. The goal by the end of the workshop is to supply new artists with information and methods to cultivate their new passion for drawing. For seasoned artists this workshop is intended to reinvigorate the way they see and understand drawing as a process based medium to improve their work. As a working artist and educator I know firsthand how important it is to revisit the fundamentals in art even after drawing consistently for the last 12 years.

In this workshop students will receive a lecture style presentation where I will introduce terminology, drawing methods, art examples, and process images. Following the presentation he will share a series of live drawing demonstrations and examples of my drawing practice. From there students will work to draw still life setups from life or direct observation using handmade paper viewfinders I will supply (I will also demonstrate how to make these). During and after the drawing process, students will be given guided feedback on their results. At the end of the day we can reserve time for a group critique and/or he can share drawing prompts and sketchbook assignments for students to continue developing the methods learned in the workshop.

Class Size: 6-8 people
4 hour class (w/ 30 minute break)

Ages 18+ are preferred, but young adults who are serious about and open to developing their drawing skills are welcome.

SUPPLIES:

9x12 Sketchbook
Sketching Pencils; One each of 2H / HB / B / 2B / 4B / 7B

Secret Sunday : 3D Printing

We’re kicking off the first of our Secret Sundays with 3D Printing!

Join us with all your printing questions, suggestions, or show & tells! We want to meet with the community to discuss what printers you like and don’t like. What slicer is your favorite and why? What do you use to create your 3D models? What is your favorite finishing technique for your prints?

Or ask us! We might know, and if not we’ll do our best to find the right answer for you.

FREE (Coffee & snacks provided; donations accepted)
All ages and skill levels! Diversity encouraged (kids grab grandma & grandpa! invite your neighbor… the more the merrier!)

What’s Secret Sunday?

Our shop would like to build community and share ideas, how is that accomplished? By having conversations! We were having a chat with a big group of friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon a few months back and one of our customers came in and asked, “What is this? Secret Sunday?!” I knew right then we’d have to start facilitating more of these Sundays. Not every Sunday event will be the same category, maybe one Sunday we’ll talk about 3D printing, another we might talk about color or brushes, and another we might pick a community activity or need and brainstorm!

It’s really whatever we need it to be. Together.
